A tale about a stick.

Once upon a time, I was visiting my family in California and my dad and I decided to go mountain biking. It was New Year's day (Chad was in Utah), and we decided to try out Holy Jim Canyon Trail. Well, I decided to try it out; my dad is a local to the area, the perks of being a mountain bike junkie. The day started out awesome, with a bumpy half hour drive to the trailhead first thing in the morning, and then it was wilderness time. The first part of the ride was a bike-and-hike section crossing over a small stream, and then up a set of switchbacks.

Everything was going fine, when all of a sudden I went around the corner of a switchback, hit a rock, went off course a bit, and then fell (with my bike, I couldn't get my feet unclipped) back over the trail, cushioning my fall with my left forearm. Unfortunately there was a stump in the way and I managed to sustain a small gash and a little piece of stick puncturing my skin.

This is the stump.

Much to my dismay, my dad only had the emergency supplies for fixing a bike, so we waited a few minutes until some hikers came up who happened to have a first aid kit. We pulled out the tiny little stick (maybe 1/4 of an inch), patched up the wound, and then were on our way. I wanted to keep riding seeing as it was my last day in sunny Southern California, so we kept going for a good 45 minutes. All the while, my arm started to hurt more and more and every bump I hit (which was a lot) became increasingly more painful. I finally had enough and we turned around to head back down the way we came. Quite a few tears and an hour and a half later we were back at the car and headed home.

Me posing next to the stump... post fall.

That day, I decided to go to the emergency room because I could twist my arm at all and it hurt like crazy. At the ER, we got an x-ray and they assessed my wound, telling me that I had a small hematoma. They put a big bandage on it and sent me home. Looking back now, it is apparent that they did NOT do a very good job cleaning it out. The next day was Kaitlin's wedding and my huge bandage matched great with my bridesmaid dress.

For the next month, my arm still hurt quite often. Everytime I slightly bumped it or someone touched it, pain would shoot down my arm. Fortunately for me, most of my professors in the nursing program are nurse practitioners and so I was constantly asking them what I should do about the hematoma and the constant pain. After a month, it finally got to the point when my professor told me I just needed to go see the doctor because obviously something wasn't right.

This is what my arm looked like at the end of January... there was a huge bump, and when I squeezed my arm, it would stand out. Freaky, I know.
Finally, I went and saw the doctor at the student health center and he told me that he thought there was a foreign body still in my arm. The following week, I came back so that he could surgically re-open the wound and see what he could find. He gave me a 1/2 inch incision below the other scar and started looking around for something that didn't belong. After the first 7 or 8 minutes I was a little concerned that I was just being paranoid, that there was nothing wrong with me and the doctor wasn't going to find anything. All of a sudden, he said, "Hey, I think I just broke a cyst, fluid's coming out." At that moment I looked over and he pulled out a stick! That's right... a stick. But not just any old stick, a 1 1/2 inch stick! I couldn't believe it, there had been a stick in my arm for over a month!

I asked the doctor if I could please keep it, so after getting it cultured, he gave me this nifty keepsake.

Moral of the story is, you never try and break your fall by hitting a stump and if you are ever in the emergency room, make sure they THOROUGHLY clean out a wound before sending you home.
The End.

Injections: First time feeling like a real nurse.

I actually feel like a real nurse now! Last week I had to do my med pass-off for my nursing essentials class and therefore needed to PRACTICE giving injections outside of class. In order to study most effectively, I had to bring a practice patient into lab with me (aka. pin cushion). Chad, like any other loyal husband, agreed to come and study while I stuck him repeatedly with a needle and injected saline into his body. What a giver. Who would give up an hour on their Saturday to come up to campus and submit to being given shots unnecessarily? Chad Mackenzie Bennett, that's who.

Can you find the 3 band-aids on this arm alone?

Happy "Not a Teenager Anymore" Day!

It's true... as of February 20th of this year, Alyse Bennett is no longer a teenager! (But let's all be honest, my dad has been telling everyone that I'm 20 for the last year to avoid awkward situations when people find out he has a teenage daughter who got married). Anyways Chad did a good job of making my birthday so much fun! Birthdays weren't quite as big of a deal in his family growing up as they were in mine, so I'm proud of him making it such a great day for me.

Growing up, when it was your birthday, the day was all about you. It was the day that you got to sit in the front seat of the car ALL DAY, you got to get a box of "junk cereal" that was all your own (Lucky Charms, Cinnamon Toast Crunch, etc.), you got to pick what the family ate for dinner or where we went out for dinner, and in elementary school Mom or Dad would bring in donuts to your class at school! Pretty much awesome.

Chad used his charm and good lucks and was able to get us 4 tickets to a Grizzlies hockey game in Salt Lake for the two of us, Jacie, and Shane. It was quite the experience. The only hockey games I've ever been to before are those of the BYU hockey team, so I was in for a culture shock. Not only was the hockey game faster and more intense, but people watching during the game was almost as entertaining! There is a unique group of people in this world who love hockey games, and they were for the most part quite colorful characters. Never before in my whole life have I seen so many Harley Davidson memorabilia in one location!

Probably one of the most entertaining aspects of the evening was the group of people sitting behind us who had brought their two 4-year olds to the game. These two little boys were dressed in snow boots, mini leather jackets and sweats. Some comments from the night:
  • "Hey, you better stop that [flinging around his plastic sound makers] or else that man sitting in front of you [Chad] is going to turn around and beat you up."
  • "No, you may not have any beer!"
  • "Who's woman is that? [referring to Jacie, sitting with Shane's arm around her]...", his response, "mine!"
Hanging out before the game started.
Shane and Jacie, I know it must seem like they're our only friends because of how many pictures you see of them on our blog, but I promise you we do have other friends. Okay, who are we kidding? They're our only friends.
Mom, Dad, and Shane!
My best friend and the love of my life... what would I do without him?
During the game, the announced that we could use our tickets from the game to get free drinks from Sonic. Since we are poor college students and suckers for anything containing the word "free" in it, of course we had to stop by sonic on our way home and load up on route 44 strawberry lime-aids. Little did I know that these are, in fact, one of Chad's favorite memories from childhood and he's been obsessed ever since.
It was a fantastic birthday: I got to hang out with my friends, attend my very first semi-professional hockey game, we ate cafe rio on the way home, I got a sweet backpack for my birthday to replace the one I've used since middle school, I experienced a route 44 strawberry limeaid from Sonic for the first time, and I got a sweet chocolate cake (absolutely amazing) from my other mom Penny Johnson. Could life get better? Nope.

Ski/Snowboard Weekend

Every year the Myer family embarks on a Myer family ski trip. Most years (all years until now), we have gone to Mammoth Mountain in California with other family friends. This year, however, Chad and I really couldn't get the time off of work or school and the Boud's daughter Natalie is also up at BYU. Fortunately for us, our families love us and wanted us to be able to go skiing anyway so the trip was planned for Park City! My family arrived on Wednesday in Provo and I was so excited to see them! They skied on Thursday and Friday (Chad had work off and got to go and ski with them while I had class/work on Thursday and Friday) and then I met up with them on Friday night with Jacie and Shane.

My parents rented an awesome cabin in Heber that was out in the middle of nowhere and we stayed there the entire weekend. There wasn't even cell phone service or the internet, talk about isolation! On Saturday, Chad and I went skiing in the morning and then we went sledding in the afternoon.

This is the sledding hill we constructed right outside the house... You would be suprised how fast that black innertube could fly down that slope and then continue on down the length of the driveway. It was fun all the way up until Chad and I went down the hill together, Chad was thrown off, the tube veered out of control, and I hit our Yukon with the back of my head!
The other fun thing we did on this trip that we've never done before is renting snowmobiles. Jacie and Shane were with us early Saturday morning when we decided to try them out, and it's a good thing they were! Shane is from Utah and therefore has had quite a bit of experience with snowmobiling and how to dig yourself out when you get stuck or fall over. We started of on a well-ridden trail off by the cabin when it started to turn into a narrow track through deep powder. Naturally, we continued on to explore the area and prove just how courageous we were. Before long Chad and I became stuck when we went too slow around a turn, and we all had to work to dig out the snowmobile!

Before leaving the cabin...Making the decision to go out in the wilderness.
Jacie and I being really helpful and taking pictures while the boys tried to dig out the snowmobile.

Look at our 2 strong boys!

In the evenings, we spent the time just hanging out in the cabin, playing games or pool in the basement, making yummy dinners, occasionally doing homework, and just enjoying each other's company by the roaring fire.Jacie and Shaners
Chad and I... I just love this boy!
My mom, pseudo-mom, and my little sister...

Some things about this trip just cannot be explained... for example, why Luke thought his ski clothes were, in fact, a ninja outfit!
The Utah boy (Shane). My little sister McKenna with some crazy eyes!

After an awesome weekend that ended far too quickly, I was sad to say goodbye to my family. You never realize how much you miss and love them until you live in another state. Hopefully I will get to see them again soon and next President' s Day weekend we will get to go skiing again. Anyways, the moral of the story is that my family is pretty much awesome and I love them.

This is how sad and upset they were when they found out we were leaving... or after traveling back down the mountain to take chad and I to our car with the car so full and loaded down we could barely breathe. gotta love 'em.

The Grand Christmas Relay

I know Christmas is long past and over, but I was looking back through my pictures from December and I want everyone to know how much fun it was! Christmas was awesome this year, and very highly anticipated after a LONG semester! Let's all be honest here, Chad and I had been counting down the days since we saw all our family at Thanksgiving.

Christmas this year was a relay race between Utah-Las Vegas- and So. California. For weeks we had been puzzling over the calender and trying to figure out how we could be able to see BOTH families for Christmas and be at Kaitlin's wedding without having Chad miss too much work. Finally, our schedule was decided. Our first stop was Las Vegas for Christmas Eve. Fortunately for us, Chad's family has always celebrated Christmas on Christmas Eve! It was lots of fun, and so different than anything I'm used to. Chad's family has always lived by the, "everyone unwrap everything all at once and we're done in 30 minutes" kind of situation.

Chad with happy little Luke Pickrell!

All geared up and ready to go drive around and look at Christmas lights before Santa arrives...

The two thugs.

Family picture with Mom!

First thing on Christmas morning (6 a.m.) Chad and I jumped into the car and headed down to Laguna Niguel to celebrate Christmas with my family. I was impressed that my sisters and brother were willing to hold off their Christmas morning for us to get there! My parents let them open up one present before we got there, and by chance Luke opened up his brand new cell phone. His cell phone was initiated into the family by approximately 12 phone calls to us as we were driving down, asking us when we were going to be there.

Happy Christmas morning!

Luke was thrilled about the fancy "comfort" Clorox cleaning gloves that Riley got him for his stocking. Some day we'll look back and laugh at how "icky" Luke thought loading the dishwasher was and how necessary he thought it was to wear gloves.

Dad with his Dale Earnhart poster. Could he be any more excited?! Now he can call himself truly patriotic.

Riley was SO excited about the LeAnn Goettel famous cheeseball in her stocking... Mom just has a way of knowing exactly what you need/want.

My two favorite boys with their two favorite bikes on a Christmas vacation mountain biking expedition! (I don't think I went on this one)

All of the Bennetts came down to California the weekend after Christmas so that Kaitlin could receive her endowment in the Newport Beach Temple.

Then, the following night, Chad's cousin Nathan got married in the Lost Angeles temple so we were able to go to the reception that night!

One of the things Luke was dying to do while we were visiting was go bowling, so we decided to all go as a family to test out our skills!

Luke would always get really into his bowling moves and literally "throw himself into it". Quite entertaining for the rest of us.

Ice skating with Jacie and the brothers and sisters!

Proof of why Riley is so much fun to shop with... she's just so creative.

Mountain biking with Dad on New Year's Day up Holy Jim Canyon. Unfortunately Chad had already gone up to Utah (dumb work), but it was a fun ride. Managed to sustain a minor injury in my left forearm and ended up in the ER that morning.

After a wonderful couple of days in California with my family(Chad had already flown back up to Utah on Monday morning), I jumped in the car and headed up to Las Vegas for Kaitlin's wedding. I picked up Chad at the airport on my way in and then went straight home to help with wedding preparation for the next day. Kaitlin and Danny Martin got married in the Las Vegas temple on January 3, 2009. It was a beautiful day with all of their friends and family close by to be with the happy beaming couple.

My adorable niece Kenzie was certainly happy for the newlyweds!

Chad and I waiting outside the temple for them to come out.

This was Johnny's favorite "kung fu panda" move for the weekend.

Kimber, Kenzie, and Nana. The reception later that night was at a stake center. It was absolutely beautiful, all decked out with lights and paper lanterns. My mom and I made the wedding cake the week before the wedding, so she and my sister drove up that day to bring the beautiful creation. This is us putting it together...... and the finished product.

My mom has done it again! Doesn't it look beautiful?

Overall, we had a fantastic Christmas vacation. It sure was busy, but we were able to see both of our families and celebrate Christmas with BOTH of them! (we sure are lucky).
